Hague-Visby Rules

Ocean carriage arranged through Trade Lane Desk is subject to the Hague-Visby Rules where mandatorily applicable.

What the rules cover

The Hague-Visby Rules are the international convention governing carrier liability for sea carriage under bills of lading. They define when a carrier is liable for loss or damage to cargo, and the time limits for claims (one year from delivery).

Liability limits

Carrier liability is limited to 666.67 SDR per package or 2 SDR per kilogram of gross weight, whichever is higher. For a loaded container this is often far below the actual cargo value.

Our recommendation

Because of these limits, we recommend all-risk cargo insurance for the full invoice value of your goods. See our Freight Insurance page or ask your desk contact.
